October 14th was chosen to coincide with the Feast of the Intercession of the Theotokos (Pokrova), a religious holiday with roots dating back to Kievan Rus. It was also a significant day for the Ukrainian Cossacks, who believed that the Virgin Mary protected them in battle. In the 20th century, the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), which fought for Ukrainian independence during and after World War II, also adopted this day to honor their soldiers.
In 2023, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine transitioned to the Revised Julian calendar. As a result, religious holidays, including the Feast of Pokrova, are now celebrated 13 days earlier. With this shift, Ukraine’s national holidays tied to Pokrova also saw a date change. By the decree of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Defender of Ukraine Day and the Day of the Ukrainian Cossacks are now celebrated on October 1st starting from 2024.
This adjustment aligns with the new religious calendar and allows the holiday to remain connected to its historical roots while adapting to the changing practices within Ukrainian society. The move signifies a commitment to keeping traditions alive while embracing necessary reforms.
